5 Tips for Traveling By RV

Are you in the process of planning an RV trip?  If you are and if this is your first time doing so, you may be looking for some guidance.  After all, traveling by RV for the first time can be fun and exciting, but it can also be worrisome at the same time.  For that reason, five helpful tips, which are ideal for first time motor home travelers, are outlined below.

1 – Map Out Your Route Ahead of Time

Deciding where you want to travel to by RV is an important component of doing so.  Of course, you have the ability to change your mind or make side trips along the way, but you should always have an idea of where you will be going.  This is important for a number of different reasons, including overall satisfaction and safety.

2 – Research Activities and Attractions Along the Way

In conjunction with the above mentioned tip of mapping out your intended travel route, doing so enables you to research activities and attractions that are located along the way.  When traveling by RV, half of the fun is all of the stops that you are able to make.  Of course, you can be spontaneous, but having an idea of exactly what you can do and see while traveling by RV is ideal for safety, as well as making sure that you don’t miss out on any great opportunities.

When it comes to researching activities and attractions that are along your way, the internet is a great place to start.  If you are taking steps now to prepare for an RV trip that isn’t set to happen for another month or so, you may want to request free vacation guides.  These guides are easy to find online.

3 – Make Sure Your RV Is Stocked Full of Activities

Making sure your RV is stocked full of fun activities is another great tip that beginners should implement.  If your upcoming motor home adventure is an extended one, you may spend a good percentage of your time on the road.  Of course, looking out the window to sightsee is a nice, enjoyable activity, but it may not hold your interest for long.  That is why fun activities should be examined.  These activities may include movies, using a laptop computer, playing handheld electronic games, reading, or enjoying another fun hobby, such as knitting.

All RV travelers are encouraged to make sure that they have fun activities for the road, but it is extremely important for parents to do so.  There is nothing worse than being stuck on an RV with unhappy children.

4 – Pack for Your Trip Ahead of Time

All first time RV travelers are encouraged to start packing early. In fact, the earlier the better.  Many supplies, such as food and travel size toiletries can be packed or put in an RV without disrupting your current daily needs.

To help ensure that your next RV trip is fun, as opposed to one that is filled with complications, create an RV trip checklist.  This checklist should include specific items that you would like to bring, such as clothing, food, drinks, eating utensils, towels, wash clothes, and so forth.  To help get you started, many websites have free printable camping checklists, which can serve as great guides.  Be sure to check off items from your list when you pack them in your bags or place them on your motor home.

5 – Always Keep Safety in Mind

As with any recreational activity, it is important to remember that there are some risks associated with traveling by RV, especially in areas that you are unfamiliar with.  For that reason, a number of steps should be taken to protect your safety.  Be sure to leave an itinerary with someone that you know and trust, always be aware of your surroundings, always keep a cell phone nearby, and be sure to have a fully stocked first aid kit.

Avoiding Jet Lag In Children

Jet Lag leaves adults tired, cranky and many times, physically ill. For children the adjustment from one time zone to another is even more difficult. Young children, especially, are very sensitive to any changes in their schedules and react poorly to sudden time differences.

Avoiding jet lag for your children makes good sense for everyone.

If traveling by air, try to travel during your child’s normal sleep time in the new time zone. It is likely they will nap during part of the trip.

Push fluids. Keeping well hydrated will go a long way toward alleviating symptoms of jet lag. Water is best, sports drinks are good, but avoid carbonated sodas.

Avoid junk foods. Sugar and high fat carbs like cookies and chips will make blood sugar unstable and make your child more fussy. At the same time, try to keep the child’s diet as close to normal as possible.

Try to get your child prepared for the new time zone by adjusting their schedule gradually over a week or two before the trip. If this is not practical, have your child go to bed in line with the new time zone the day before the trip. When you arrive at your destination, let them nap, but keep them on the new time.

Physical activity will help your child’s body deal with the jet lag. Take them for a walk around the new city, a swim in your hotel pool or let them run through a park when you get to your destination. It will also help to let your child walk around on the plane often.

Parents should remember jet lag effects adults and children equally and that children are not as psychologically able to push past the physical effects. Children may need extra nap time for a few days upon arrival at the new destination.

Traveling By RV: Why You Should Create a Trip Itinerary

Are you interested in taking a trip in your RV in the near future?  If you are, you will likely hear over and over again the importance of being properly prepared.  As tiring as this may be to keep on hearing, it is an important point that needs to be mentioned.  The more prepared you are for your upcoming RV trip, the more fun you are likely to have, while being safe at the same time.

Concerning RV trips, there are a number of steps that you can take to make sure that you are properly prepared for your upcoming trip.  These steps involve creating a supplies checklist for yourself, packing and shopping early, and so forth.  One other step that you will want to take involves creating an itinerary for yourself.  An itinerary is an outline of your trip.

When it comes to creating an itinerary for traveling by RV, there are many motor home owners and renters who wonder what the importance of doing so is.  After all, many like having the option of making last minute stops along the way.  Of course, these last minute stops and side trips are a great way to add fun and excitement to your next RV trip, but there are still a number of benefits to creating an itinerary for yourself.  A few of those benefits are highlighted below for your convenience.

Perhaps, the greatest benefit of creating an itinerary for yourself is related with your safety.  It is no secret that traveling by RV can be dangerous.  For example, you may end up stranded or you may get into a car accident.  If you are traveling through an unpopulated area, you may not get reception on your cell phone.  Since it is always advised that you stay with your motor home, especially in bad weather, you may end up spending a few days stranded.  If you created an itinerary and leave it with someone that you know and love, help may be able to come a lot quicker for you.

An itinerary is also a great way to make the most out of your next RV trip.  Although you can create your own itinerary and include just about anything you want, you are encouraged to write down the areas in which you will be visiting, for how long, and what you want to do there.  Creating an itinerary before you leave for your RV trip may require a little bit of research, but this can benefit your trip in multiple ways.  For example, if your RV trip will take you through North Carolina, researching local activities and attractions to add to your itinerary can give you good entertainment ideas.  By taking a few minutes to do this research, you are more likely to enjoy your next RV trip and less likely to miss out on something fun!

As previously stated, you have the ability to include anything that you want on your RV trip itinerary.  With that being said, be sure to include the basics.  These basics include the start and end times of your trip, the main route in which you will be traveling and which stops you plan to make each day.  As a reminder, take your itinerary with you to help serve as a vacation guide, but also be sure to leave a copy with a trusted friend or relative.

Navigating Airport Security With Children

Over the last several years, airport security measures have changed quite a bit. If you haven’t flown in a while, there are a few things you should know.

Strollers, car seats, toys and all other objects must go through the security X ray machine. Fold your stroller and make sure to remove small toys or other items from storage pockets before putting it on the conveyer belt. Put them in the plastic bins provided This way nothing gets lost. Make sure to warn your child about the process and reassure them you will get your items back.

Never put your car seat through the metal detector with your child still in it

When going through the walk through metal detector, you will probably need to remove your baby from sling or baby carrier so the baby carrier can be inspected.

Instruct your children to empty their pockets before going through the metal detector, also remind them that the security check point is not the place for games or loud, boisterous behavior.

Have your older child go through the metal detector in front of you so that you can keep visual contact with her/him.  Carry younger children.

You are not allowed to pass your child to anyone else while you are going through the metal detector.

If the metal detector goes off and you are carrying your child, both you and the child will further examined by security. You will probably be asked to remove your shoes and they may scan you and your child with a wand.

Never hand your child to the security guard to hold.

If traveling with a baby or toddler, you are able to carry breast milk or formula in your carry on bag.

You can request a private security screening if you are traveling with more than one child, or if your child has a disability and requires special care.

Tips For Hiking With Children

A pleasant walk is often the perfect way to see the sights on vacation, and most kids will enjoy the journey.  Just remember to keep the kids and their needs in mind while out for your stroll.

Toddlers will enjoy exploring at their level–poking in the dirt, pointing out flowers and spider webs, basically getting muddy and having a blast.  Don’t pressure them into hurrying up, just try to move along at their speed.  They’ll tire soon enough, and when that happens, a good baby carrier–especially a comfortable backpack–will almost be a necessity.

Preschoolers will also enjoy exploring at their own wandering pace, though some will balk if the path gets too rough.  Encourage them to find their own way over rocks and trees, and they’ll feel right at home.  They might even want to stop and splash through streams or rain, or collect leaves or pine cones.  A diaper bag with a change of clothes or ponchos might come in handy on these trips.

As kids tire, and grumble about sore feet, it might help to remind them of the cafe or ice cream shop at the end of the hike.

Be mindful of wildlife.  Insects might not appreciate the visitors, and larger animals might challenge the family for entering their territory.

Walks in town have their own dangers.  In some countries, the crosswalk doesn’t carry the same stopping power that it does in the United States, and pedestrians are expected to watch out for cars, not the other way around.  Make sure the kids are safely contained to the sidewalk and don’t dash into roads.

Sometimes, depending on the traffic or the local wildlife, the safest place for a kid is up off the ground, in a backpack or daddy’s arms, where they can’t get hurt or lost.

Traveling By RV: How to Have a Fun, Safe Time

RV trips are increasing in popularity.  Many couples and families are finding motor homes a relatively affordable way to travel.  Many also enjoy the option of traveling on the road while still having many of the comforts of home.  This is particularly true with long distance trips. Whether your next RV trip is a long distance or a short distance trip, there are a number of steps that you can take to help ensure that your next trip is not only fun, but safe.

The first step in planning a fun and safe RV trip involves deciding on an intended route.  This can help on a number of different levels.  For safety, deciding on a route ahead of time gives you the opportunity to familiarize yourself with that area by examining maps.  Even with an examination done beforehand, it is still important to bring a travel map with you.  In fact, if you are an RV owner, a map should be kept in your motor home at all times.

Deciding on an intended route ahead of time can also help you with activities and attractions.  Many RV owners and renters are known for stopping along the way to participate in fun activities or to visit neat attractions, like flea markets, amusement parks, or museums.  Researching what you can do and see before you leave for your RV trip can help to make sure that you will not miss out on anything fun and exciting.  It can also help you create a travel budget for yourself.

Speaking of money, it is important to have extra money on hand, especially for long distance travels and trips.  This is important for safety, as well as fun.  Always remember that gas prices vary from city to city and from state to state.  Money is also nice to have on hand if you ever decide to make any unexpected stops along the way.  With that being said, use caution.  Do not carry too much cash on you or leave it all in once place.  For travelers, traveler’s checks, debit cards, and credit cards are a great idea.

For safety, be sure to bring all needed documents with you.  These documents should include the proper identification, like a driver’s license, and insurance cards, such as those for health and auto.  Health insurance cards are particularly important.  If you or anyone in your traveling party, like your family, suffers an injury, you will want to be able to get help and treatment right away.  This is best done by having all proper documents, including health insurance cards, readily available.

As stated above, researching fun and popular activities and attractions that are along your intended route of travel is a great idea.  Also, be sure to plan activities for the road.  The good news is that you have a lot of options, as RVs give travelers more room than traditional cars.  If a television is present, movies are a good option.  Video games, board games, card games, and reading books are also great activities for the road.

For safety, be sure to use your best judgment.  Using your best judgment can do wonders for you.  For example, does an area that you wish to stop at look dangerous or unsafe?  If so, you may want to continue moving on and get gasoline or food at another place, when possible.  It is also important to keep safety in mind when staying at an RV park or a public campground with motor home accommodations.  Never invite strangers onto your RV, especially right away.  If you are traveling with children, be sure to set ground rules.

By keeping the above mentioned points in mind, your next RV trip is likely to be both fun and safe.  Remember that fun and safety go hand in hand.  You and the rest of your traveling party are more likely to have a better time when you are all happy, healthy, and safe.

Navigation Systems you can use for Holiday Travel

Nothing is more frustrating that trying to travel for the holidays and not be able to figure out how to get there. Even if you have a plan when you leave home, things can get turned around quickly if you don’t have a good sense of direction. Stopping for directions isn’t always effective because people don’t always have the information you need to get to your destination.

There are plenty of amazing navigation systems you can use to help take the frustration out of holiday travel though. Advances in technology offer us a great way to have these tools at our fingertips. Many people travel with their laptop computers and you can access travel routes either online or with various types of computer software programs.

Even a simple compass in your vehicle can assist you when you least expect it. I was recently driving along when there was a detour due to road construction. I followed everyone else and then came to some signs. It said 5 miles East and then 11 Miles North to get to my destination. The problem was there were no arrows and I didn’t know which way I was headed on that road. Luckily my car has a built in compass so I was able to figure it out. If you vehicle doesn’t have one then you need to purchase one. It will come in handy as you travel for the holidays.

This information will allow you to find the fastest route as well as the shortest route to get to your holiday destination. You can also find the route that has access to hotels, restaurants, and rest areas. This is great information if you are traveling with children because you will find you have to stop more often in order to keep everyone happy.

Having a laptop can also keep you up to date with the weather conditions during your holiday travel. This is important because if roads are closed or there are delays due to an accident you can easily find yourself an alternate route. Many people have similar types of navigation systems on their cell phones. The most high tech gadget is the very popular iPhone. If offers access to the internet and has a 3 ½ inch monitor for you to view the information on.

Many vehicles feature a Global Positioning System known as GPS. There are some models you can purchase separately and then add them to any model of vehicle that you have. This is a very good tool that you will always have when you are operating your vehicle. Even if you don’t know exactly where you are, a satellite system does and it send that information to the GPS system. You can then enter the information for your travel destination and it will give you the directions you need to get there.

Don’t spend your time traveling for the holidays caught up in traffic or bad weather. You also don’t want to drive for hours and then realize you have been going the wrong direction. The landscaping of the area can change over the years leaving you unfamiliar with the way to get there on your own. These types of navigational tools will definitely help you to get your barrings and to arrive for the holidays on time.
